Dry Used Shipping Containers for Sale in Kenya

Dry Used Shipping Containers for Sale in Kenya

Looking for a strong, secure, and affordable way to store your goods or create a new space in Kenya? Dry shipping containers are a fantastic choice. These tough steel boxes, originally built to carry cargo across the sea, are now widely used in Kenya for many different needs.

They are perfect for situations where you need instant storage space. Why are they so popular? Because they have special features that make them great:

  • Portable: Need to move your storage or workspace? Dry shipping containers can be easily lifted and moved from one place to another using cranes or special trucks. This makes them very flexible.
  • Modular: As your needs grow, you can add more containers. Start with one and expand your storage or building project gradually. This makes planning and budgeting easier.
  • Strong & Secure: These containers are built like tanks! They are extremely tough and hard to break into, making them ideal for storing valuable items safely on-site.
  • Weatherproof: They are designed to keep cargo dry during long sea journeys. This means they are excellent for protecting weather-sensitive goods from rain, dust, and sun.

At Frontier Containers EA Limited, we understand the value these containers bring. We supply high-quality dry shipping containers in Kenya, helping you find the right fit for your storage or building project.

Available Dry Shipping Container Sizes in Kenya

We stock the most common sizes to meet your needs. Here’s a look at the standard dry shipping containers we offer:

1. 20-Foot (6m) Dry Shipping Container

  • Dimensions (Approx.): 6 meters (L) x 2.4 meters (W) x 2.6 meters (H)

  • Ideal For: Small storage needs, tight spaces, budget-friendly projects, small shops, basic site offices, or simple workshops.

  • Benefits:

    • Affordable: Generally the most budget-friendly option for basic storage or small customizations.
    • Easy Delivery: Their smaller size means they are easier to transport and offload, even in tighter locations, often requiring less complex crane work.
    • Maneuverable: Easier to position precisely on site due to their size.
  • Estimated Price Range (Empty, Kshs): Kshs. 160,000 – 250,000 (Please contact us for the most current prices)

2. 40-Foot High Cube (12m) Dry Shipping Container

  • Dimensions (Approx.): 12 meters (L) x 2.4 meters (W) x 2.9 meters (H)

  • Ideal For: Larger storage needs, creating more spacious container homes or offices, workshops, mobile warehouses, or commercial spaces.

  • Benefits:

    • More Space: Significantly more internal volume (approximately 76 cubic meters) compared to a 20ft container. The extra 0.3 meters in height (High Cube) provides better headroom, making it much more comfortable for living or working spaces.
    • Popular Choice: The High Cube 40ft is the most commonly stocked and used size for projects needing more room.
    • Versatile: Great for a wide range of customizations due to the extra space and height.
  • Estimated Price Range (Empty, Kshs): Kshs. 350,000 – 420,000 (Please contact us for the most current prices)

(Note: Standard 40ft General Purpose (GP) containers, which are about 0.3m shorter in height, are also available upon request but less common than the High Cube version).

(Optional Addition – 10ft Containers)

3. 10-Foot (3m) Dry Shipping Container (Cut Down)

  • Dimensions (Approx.): 3 meters (L) x 2.4 meters (W) x 2.6 meters (H)
  • Note: These are less common and are typically made by cutting a standard 20ft container in half.
  • Ideal For: Very small storage needs or projects in extremely tight spaces.
  • Estimated Price Range (Empty, Kshs): Kshs. 100,000 – 140,000 (Availability may vary)

Frequently Asked Questions about Used Shipping Containers for Sale in Kenya

1. How much does a standard 20ft dry shipping container cost in Kenya?

For a standard used 20ft container, the estimated price ranges from Kshs 160,000 to Kshs 250,000.

  • Why the range? The price varies based on the container's condition (e.g., "Food Grade" quality vs. standard cargo worthy) and current market availability. This size is our most affordable option for general storage.

2. What is the price of a 40ft container, and why is it more expensive?

A 40ft High Cube container typically costs between Kshs 350,000 and Kshs 420,000.

  • Value: While the price is higher than a 20ft unit, you get more than double the volume (approx. 76 cubic meters vs. 33 cubic meters), making it the most cost-effective option if you have large storage needs or are planning a spacious container home.

3. What is the difference between a "Standard" 40ft container and a "High Cube" container?

The difference is height.

  • Standard 40ft (GP): Is 8ft 6in (2.6m) high.

  • 40ft High Cube (HC): Is 9ft 6in (2.9m) high.

  • Why we stock High Cubes: The extra 1 foot (30cm) of headroom makes a huge difference for air circulation and storage capacity. If you plan to convert the container into a home or office, the High Cube is essential to keep the ceiling from feeling too low after adding insulation and flooring.

4. What does "Food Grade" mean, and why should I care?

"Food Grade" refers to the container's history. It means the unit has previously carried only dry food products (like coffee, rice, or sugar) rather than chemicals or hazardous materials.

  • Why it matters: At Frontier Containers, we prioritize sourcing Food Grade units because they are odorless and non-toxic. This makes them significantly safer if you intend to use the container for housing, an office, or storing sensitive goods.

5. Do you sell smaller 10ft containers?

Yes, but they are specialized.

  • Availability: Shipping lines do not standardly manufacture 10ft containers for general cargo. We create them by professionally cutting a standard 20ft container in half and welding a new rear wall/door.

  • Price: Estimated Kshs 100,000 – 140,000. Note that the price is not exactly "half" of a 20ft unit because of the labor involved in the modification.

7. What site preparation do I need to do before delivery?

You do not need a complex concrete slab, but the ground must be level and firm.

  • Best Practice: We recommend placing the container on concrete blocks, paving slabs, or railroad ties at the four corners.

  • Why: This raises the steel floor off the damp soil to prevent rust and ensures the container sits flat so the doors open and close smoothly (if the container is twisted on uneven ground, the doors will jam).

8. Do I need a permit to place a shipping container on my land?

In most cases, containers are classified as "temporary" or "movable" structures, which simplifies the process compared to building a permanent stone store.

  • Compliance: However, regulations vary by County. If you are placing it permanently or using it for a business, you should check with your local County Government planning office. For simple farm storage, permits are often not required, but it is always best to verify.

9. How secure are shipping containers against theft?

They are extremely secure.

  • Construction: The walls are made of heavy-gauge Corten steel which is very difficult to cut without loud industrial power tools.

  • Doors: The original cargo doors are heavy steel with robust locking bars. For extra security, we can weld a "Lock Box" (a steel cowl) over the padlock area, making it impossible to cut the padlock with bolt cutters.

10. Can I come and choose the specific container I want?

Yes, absolutely. We encourage you to visit our yard to inspect the containers in person.

  • Transparency: You can check the floors, doors, and walls yourself. If you cannot visit, we are happy to send detailed photos or videos of the exact unit you will be purchasing so there are no surprises on delivery.

11. Are the containers waterproof?

Yes. We sell units guaranteed to be "Wind and Water Tight" (WWT).

  • Inspection: Before sale, we check that door seals are intact and that there are no holes in the roof or walls. This ensures your goods stay dry, even in heavy Kenyan rain.

12. How long will a used shipping container last?

A used container has typically been at sea for 10-15 years, but it still has a long life ahead.

  • Lifespan on Land: When placed on blocks (off the ground) and maintained (painting rust spots), a used container can easily last another 20 to 30 years as a static storage unit or building.

13. Can you customize the container before delivering it?

Yes. We have a full fabrication team led by Eng. Stephen Karume.

  • Options: We can add personnel doors, windows, vents, shelves, or electrical wiring before delivering the unit. This turns a simple storage box into a functional workspace or shop immediately upon arrival.

14. What are the payment terms?

Generally, payment is required before the container is released for delivery.

  • Security: We provide a formal Pro-Forma Invoice and a contract.

  • Method: We accept Bank Transfer (EFT/RTGS) or M-Pesa. We advise against paying cash to individuals; always ensure you are paying into the official company account.

15. Why should I buy from Frontier Containers instead of a random broker?

Buying from an established company protects your investment.

  • Scam Protection: The container industry has many scammers online. We have a physical yard you can visit.

  • Quality: We select Food Grade units and inspect them personally.

  • Support: We have our own transport, meaning we are responsible for the unit until it is safely on the ground at your site.
