Tanktainers in Kenya – Safe, Certified Fuel Storage & Management Solutions
Does your business in Kenya use a lot of fuel for trucks, buses, generators, or heavy machinery? Managing fuel can be expensive and difficult, with losses from theft or poor tracking. A Tanktainer offers a smart, safe, and efficient way to store, transport, and manage your fuel needs.
A Tanktainer is not just a normal container. It’s a special container that has a large fuel tank built inside a standard 20-foot or 40-foot shipping container. It’s like a mobile, secure fuel station!
At Frontier Containers EA Limited, we design and build high-quality Tanktainers in Kenya that meet strict international safety rules. Whether you need fuel for a fleet of trucks, a mine, a school bus park, or even your own petrol station, we have the right Tanktainer for you.
What is a Tanktainer?
A Tanktainer is a specialized type of shipping container. Inside a normal steel container (either 20ft or 40ft), a large fuel tank is fitted. This tank is connected to a fuel pump, pipes, and electrical systems. Some Tanktainers also have a small office or storage space built in.
The main purpose is to store and dispense liquid fuels like diesel or petrol (gasoline) safely and efficiently. Because it’s built into a shipping container, it’s very strong, secure, and can be easily moved from one place to another if needed.
Why Choose a Tanktainer for Fuel Management in Kenya?
Managing fuel well is very important for many businesses. Here’s why a Tanktainer is often the best choice:
- Safe & Certified: Our Tanktainers are built to meet international ISO and IMO standards. This means they are safe for storing and transporting both normal and hazardous fuels.
- Efficient Fuel Control: A Tanktainer helps you keep track of exactly how much fuel is used by whom. This stops theft and waste, saving your business money.
- Secure Storage: The thick steel container and locked systems make it very hard for fuel to be stolen.
- Portable: Need to move your fuel station? A Tanktainer can be picked up and moved to a new site using a crane truck.
- All-in-One Solution: It includes the tank, pump, pipes, and electrical system. Everything you need is built in.
- Customizable: We can build Tanktainers in different sizes (20ft or 40ft) and add features like a small office, extra pumps, or a backup generator.
- Quick Setup: Unlike building a permanent fuel storage tank, a Tanktainer is ready to use quickly once delivered.
Common Uses for Tanktainers in Kenya
Tanktainers are used by many different types of businesses and organizations in Kenya:
- Transportation Companies: For fleets of trucks, lorries, and delivery vans. It’s cheaper and safer than filling up at many different petrol stations.
- Mining Companies: For fueling large, heavy mining machines and trucks at the mine site.
- Schools & Colleges: For school buses or generators. Helps manage fuel costs for the school.
- Large Companies: For staff buses, company generators, or machinery. Gives better control over fuel spending.
- Petrol Stations: Tanktainers can be used to build small petrol stations, but you need approval from EPRA (Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority).
- Fuel Storage Facilities: For storing large amounts of fuel for resale or backup.
What’s Included in a Standard Tanktainer from Frontier Containers?
When you buy a Tanktainer from us, it comes as a complete, working unit. Here’s what’s typically included:
- Fuel Storage Tank: A large, strong tank made from steel or special plastic, designed to hold thousands of liters of fuel safely.
- Fuel Dispensing Pump: A pump to get the fuel out easily and safely. It can be a basic pump or a more advanced one that tracks how much fuel each vehicle takes.

Frequently Asked Questions
What exactly is a Tanktainer, and how is it different from a normal fuel tank?
A Tanktainer is a specialized fuel storage unit. It's essentially a large fuel tank that is built and housed inside a standard shipping container (usually 20ft or 40ft). This makes it very different from a normal, standalone fuel tank which is just a metal tank sitting on the ground.
The container part makes the Tanktainer much stronger, more secure, and portable. It also protects the tank and its systems (like the pump and pipes) from damage and weather.
Tanktainers are also built to meet international safety standards (like ISO and IMO), making them certified for safe transport and storage of fuel, including hazardous types. A normal tank might not have these certifications.
How much does a Tanktainer cost in Kenya?
The cost of a Tanktainer in Kenya depends mainly on its size and the features included. Here are estimated price ranges for the Tanktainer unit only (excluding transport and site prep):
- Small Tanktainer (20ft): Kshs. 2,500,000 – 3,500,000 (Holds approx. 10,000 - 15,000 liters)
- Standard Tanktainer (40ft): Kshs. 4,500,000 – 6,000,000 (Holds approx. 25,000 - 35,000 liters)
- Large Tanktainer (40ft, High Cap.): Kshs. 7,000,000 – 9,000,000 (Holds 40,000+ liters) These prices are for the complete unit including the tank, pump, plumbing, and basic electrical system. Prices can be higher if you add extras like a backup generator or an office/storage compartment. Remember to also budget for transportation and offloading, which can be significant (see our main article for estimated transport costs, e.g., Kshs. 25,000 – 160,000 depending on size and distance).
What sizes of Tanktainers are available, and which capacity do I need?
We mainly build Tanktainers using standard 20-foot and 40-foot shipping containers.
- 20ft Tanktainer: This is smaller and holds roughly 10,000 to 15,000 liters of fuel. It's good if you have a smaller fleet (like a few trucks or buses) or limited space.
- 40ft Tanktainer: This is the most popular size and holds roughly 25,000 to 35,000 liters. It's suitable for medium to large fleets or sites with higher fuel consumption.
- Large 40ft Tanktainer: Designed to hold even more, up to 50,000 liters or more. This is for very high fuel users like large mines or bulk storage facilities. The right size for you depends on how much fuel you use per day/week and how often you want to refill the Tanktainer. We can help you calculate the best size based on your specific fuel needs.
What features are included in a standard Tanktainer from Frontier Containers?
A standard Tanktainer from us is a complete, working fuel station. It typically includes:
- The Fuel Tank: A strong, certified tank inside the container.
- Fuel Dispensing Pump: To pump fuel out safely.
- Plumbing System: All the necessary pipes and fittings.
- Electrical System: Wiring to power the pump and any lights.
- Safety Features: Valves, vents, and gauges to ensure safe operation.
- Secure Access: Locked doors for the pump area and tank compartment. We can also add optional features like a backup generator, an office/storage room, multiple pumps, or fuel monitoring systems. The exact features will be discussed and agreed upon when you order.
Are Tanktainers safe and certified for use in Kenya?
Yes, safety is our top priority. Our Tanktainers are designed and built according to strict international standards like ISO (International Organization for Standardization) and IMO (International Maritime Organization). This means they are certified as safe for storing and transporting both hazardous and non-hazardous liquids, including fuels. The containers themselves are very strong (made from thick steel), and the tanks and systems inside are designed to prevent leaks and spills. We ensure all our Tanktainers meet the necessary safety requirements for use in Kenya.
Can I use a Tanktainer as a petrol station?
Yes, Tanktainers can be used to build small petrol stations. However, there's an important step: You must get approval from EPRA (Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority). EPRA has rules and procedures you must follow to operate a petrol station legally in Kenya. This includes safety inspections and getting the right licenses. We can build the Tanktainer part for you, but you will need to handle the EPRA application and approval process yourself, or with the help of a consultant. We can advise you on the technical requirements needed for an EPRA-compliant station.
How long does it take to get a Tanktainer delivered and set up?
The process involves two main stages:
- Fabrication: This is where your Tanktainer is built in our workshop. Because it's a complex unit with tanks, pumps, and electrical systems, this usually takes 4 to 6 weeks or sometimes longer, depending on the design and our current workload.
- Delivery & Placement: Once fabrication is complete, we schedule transport to your site. Delivery time depends on your location. Offloading it onto your prepared site requires a crane truck. So, from the time you place your order, you can generally expect your Tanktainer to be delivered and placed on-site within 5 to 8 weeks. This is still much faster than building a traditional fuel storage facility.
What other costs should I budget for besides the Tanktainer itself?
The quoted price for the Tanktainer usually only covers the unit built at our yard. There are other important costs:
- Transportation & Offloading: Getting the finished Tanktainer from our yard to your site and lifting it off the truck using a crane. This cost depends on the distance, Tanktainer size, and site access. Check our main article for estimated transport costs (e.g., Kshs. 25,000 – 160,000 for a 40ft unit).
- Site Preparation: Your Tanktainer needs a very level, stable, and strong foundation, often requiring concrete work. This cost depends heavily on your site's condition.
- Utilities Connection: Connecting electricity to power the pump (and possibly a backup generator) is usually your responsibility.
- Fuel Delivery & Filling: The cost of the actual fuel to fill the Tanktainer and the delivery of that fuel is separate. Make sure to budget for these extra costs to get the full picture of your project's total price.
